Step into the origins of a nation and uncover the stories that shaped Bulgaria as you know it today. Join our “Old Capitals of Bulgaria” small group guided tour from Veliko Tarnovo — a journey designed for those who want to go beyond the surface and truly connect with the country’s past.

We will begin at the impressive ruins of Pliska Fortress, Bulgaria’s first capital. As you walk among its massive stone walls and ancient palace grounds, it’s easy to imagine the power and ambition of the early Bulgarian state. This is where it all started — a place that still carries a quiet, almost forgotten grandeur.

From there, we continue to one of the most mysterious and iconic landmarks in the country — the Madara Horseman. Carved high into a towering limestone cliff, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is unlike anything else in Europe. Surrounded by nature and sweeping views, it’s not just a historical stop, but a moment to pause, take it all in, and feel the scale of history around you.

Next, we travel to Veliki Preslav, the second capital and the cultural heart of Bulgaria’s Golden Age. Here, you’ll explore the impressive fortress, walking through the remains of royal complexes and ancient structures that once defined one of the most influential cities in medieval Europe. The experience continues at the Preslav Archaeological Museum, where finely crafted ceramics, inscriptions, and royal artifacts bring this remarkable period to life and reveal the sophistication of a thriving cultural center.

There will be a short break in Preslav, giving you time to relax before we continue our journey back.

On the return to Veliko Tarnovo, we make a brief stop at the Aviation Park in Omurtag — a small, contrasting glimpse into a different chapter of Bulgaria’s history.

This tour isn’t just about visiting sites — it’s about experiencing the layers of Bulgaria, understanding its roots, and sharing the journey with like-minded people in a relaxed, small group setting.

If you’ve been living in Bulgaria and feel it’s time to truly discover it — this is where you start.
